Lucere’s Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins

Sclerotherapy uses injections to treat varicose and spider veins with high efficacy. Most clients who have small varicose veins will benefit from this minimally invasive treatment. This involves the injecting of a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution scars the vein to force blood to reroute its path through healthier veins.

Once the vein collapses, it essentially reabsorbs into local tissue and fades with time. Sclerotherapy may require a series of treatments for optimal results. Treated veins typically begin to fade within a few months after treatment.

At Lucere, we can also use Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS). Our experts can inject sclerosant into the vein, while the treatment process is monitored on an ultrasound screen. UGFS is effective for allowing veins below the skin surface to be treated.

  • In order to optimize your results, we ask that you purchase compression stockings prior to your treatment, and that you bring them with you to your appointment. We recommend compression stockings with 20-30 mm Hg compression. These can be prescribed, and at times, covered through private insurance.
  • You should not have a tan at the time of your treatment. Avoid sun exposure in the legs for 1 month prior to your Sclerotherapy treatment.
  • Do not use moisturizers on the day of your treatment.
  • You may be most comfortable wearing shorts or a skirt for the treatment.

What can I expect after my Sclerotherapy treatment?

  • Proper compression following Sclerotherapy is critical for the success of the procedure. Please wear your compression stockings for 24 hours (day and night) after the procedure.
  • Compression stockings should be worn at all times until bedtime for 14 days. It is not necessary to sleep with your stockings on. Remove them prior to bathing.
  • Bruising and discoloration are common after Sclerotherapy. These issues will resolve after a couple of weeks. It is very important to avoid sun exposure to the treatment areas after Sclerotherapy. Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation in the treated areas. Wear protective clothing and sun block for at least 1 month after the treatment.
  • You can exercise 24 hours after your Sclerotherapy treatment. Avoid strenuous, high impact activities for one week after treatment.
  • Avoid excessively hot baths, showers, or hot tubs for one week after treatment.
  • Occasionally, when treating larger vessels, a small clot or “knot” may develop. If this happens, we would like you to call us. Sometimes we do a simple extraction of this clot to let it dissolve on its own.
  • Pain after Sclerotherapy is usually minimal and goes away after 1-2 days. If you experience discomfort, you may take Tylenol or extra-strength Tylenol. If you experience significant pain, redness, swelling, crusting or bleeding, call our office immediately.
