What Exactly is the difference between Botox and Fillers and do you need both?

Article Contents

Lucere Dermatology & Laser Clinic is Edmonton’s premier destination for expertly injected Botox and Fillers, and we are proud to deliver results that our clients love! Our injectable treatments are offered at both Lucere South Side and Lucere Downtown. It seems like everywhere you turn, cosmetic injectables have become a hot topic and there are endless offerings on the market in terms of product and technique.

But the truth is, cosmetic injectables like neuromodulators and fillers are not always differentiated properly, and many people out there still don’t know the difference between botox vs fillers. Neuromodulators, like Botox, Dysport and Nuceiva, as well as premium fillers, like Juvéderm and Restalyne, are very different and have different purposes to help clients achieve their goals.

In short, neuromodulators are responsible for relaxing specific muscles in the face to soften expressions and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Filler, on the other hand, works to restore volume, as well as create definitions and structures where needed. Both are important treatments that allow a client to achieve their goals in a targeted and holistic way. We will discuss the differences between these treatments in more detail below.

What is Botox and How Does It Work?

Of all the cosmetic treatments out there, in the world of medical aesthetics, the most well-known is Botox. Botox is a neuromodulator and there are different brands we carry at Lucere in both our South Side and Downtown locations, including Botox, Dysport and Nuceiva. Neuromodulators are designed to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. For those of you who don’t know, Botox comes from a neurotoxin produced by clostridium botulinum, which is the bacterium responsible for producing botulinum toxins.

That might sound intense, but when used in very small doses, neuromodulators can get rid of those forehead lines, frown lines (Glabella) and even the crow’s feet or lines found around your eyes. When handled by an expertly trained medical professional, neuromodulator can also be used to treat medical conditions such as severe headaches, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), as well as reduce tension in the jaw.

So how does the whole process work? Well, wrinkles and fine lines certainly form in predictable spots and there is a reason for that. There are specific muscle contractions that we constantly use because of repeated expressions we make daily. Some of those expressions include frowning, raising the eyebrows, smiling and squinting. Over the years, the way our muscles contract deepens the lines in our skin that fold in the same way because of the repeated expressions.

That’s where anti-wrinkle treatments like Botox, Dysport and Nuceiva come in! When administered by an expert injector, neuromodulators temporarily block local nerve impulses that lead to muscle contractions in certain areas of the face. This essentially relaxes the muscles, leading to softer expressions and ultimately minimizing the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles they create.

What is Filler and How Does It Work?

Unfortunately, as the years go by and we begin to get older, time certainly has its effects on us. One of the biggest changes our body’s experience is a loss of volume in our faces. This loss of volume can lead to hollow under eyes, cheeks that have lost structure and lift, lips that look smaller, and the list goes on.

Why exactly does this happen? It all begins and ends with collagen! Collagen is an essential protein that our bodies naturally create, and it is the building block of our skin health and quality. It has a huge role in maintaining the youthfulness of our skin and makes up approximately 75% of the support structure of the skin.

But as the years go by and we begin to age, our body’s natural production of collagen begins to decrease naturally. Our bodies lose the ability to naturally create quality collagen. But collagen production in our bodies can decrease from other factors beyond age and time. Other factors that make our bodies decrease collagen production include bad lifestyle habits like smoking, poor diets (i.e. diets high in sugar) and of course, environmental factors such as pollution or sun damage.

This may all seem like bad news, but there is a solution, and that is expertly injected dermal fillers! Dermal fillers are amazing for restoring volume in the face, which leads to a more youthful and enhanced appearance. Filler is also responsible for bringing back the natural contours of your face and adding definition and structure to your features

The possibilities with expertly injected fillers are endless! Some of the amazing things filler can help with include:

  • Lifting and projecting eyebrows
  • Improving under eye hollows & darkness
  • Adding volume, structure and definition to the lips
  • Adding volume to the temples
  • Adding volume and lift to the cheeks
  • Smoothing lines around the mouth
  • Contouring the chin and jawline

The fillers also helps with symmetry, which many of us are after. It’s not uncommon to have lips that are asymmetrical or cheeks that lack symmetry as well. Dermal fillers can help with adding volume where needed to even out the look of features on either side of the face.

Botox and filler, though both injected into the face, are two different things Botox works by relaxing the muscles in the face, which softens expressions that lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Filler adds volume or fills fine lines and wrinkles. Neuromodulators can be used alongside filler to give you a more youthful, well-rested and fresh appearance.

Botox and Fillers are Half Science and Half Art

At Lucere, we believe that filler treatments and neuromodulators are half science and half art. It is paramount that your injector has a medical background and works for a reputable clinic. Safety is always the first priority, and no one wants to have a botched job! It’s not worth the discounts at all. It’s also important that your injector is using quality products from recognized brands. Don’t hesitate to ask your injector what neuromodulator and filler product they’re using for your treatments.

Your injector should also understand the art form behind injecting. That means they look at facial anatomy and study your facial features well. Cosmetic injections aren’t a cookie-cutter process and each face requires a customized and personalized approach for treatment. This ensures your facial features are enhanced in a way that suits you. Your injector should also listen to your needs and be sure to deliver results you are proud of.
